Croft leads Mariners to 66-0 rout of Bucs
Teddy Croft tossed four touchdown passes and the Homer special teams returned two punts and a kickoff for scores en route to powering the Mariners to a staggering 66-0 victory over the Valdez Buccaneers on Saturday at Mariner Field.
With the victory, Homer improved to 2-1 for the season. Valdez slipped to 0-3.
The Mariners, who rolled up more than 330 total yards on offense, didn't waste any time in getting their offense going against Valdez, which slipped to 0-3. Homer punchd its way into the end zone midway through the first quarter and never looked back.
Joe Ravin shifted the HHS offense into high gear early on. Just 4:20 into the non-conference showdown, the Mariner receiver pulled in a pass from Croft and raced 68 yards for a touchdown. Cody Johnson's ensuing extra-point kick staked Homer to a 7-0 cushion with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter.
Chris Cudaback turned the Mariners' next possession into points. He powered his way into the end zone from a yard out at the 3:03 mark. Noah Fisk tacked on the two-point conversion and upped Homer's lead to 15-0.
Croft, who completed four of his six passing attempts for 159 yards, finished off the Mariners' first-quarter barrage minutes later. He hit Dawson Felde with a 28-yard scoring pass with 46 seconds left in the initial frame to drive the HHS lead to 22-0.
The Mariner special teams tormented the Buccaneers in the second quarter. After the Homer defense had forced Valdez to punt away its ensuing possession just 1:45 into the second quarter, the Mariner special teams struck quickly. They returned the punt 69 yards for a touchdown and a 29-0 cushion.
The Mariner offense added to Valdez's woes, too. Less than three minutes after the HHS special teams had scored, Felde capped Homer's first offensive series of the quarter by crashing in from 12 yards out.
Life only got worse for the Buccaneers from there. Just three plays after Felde's second touchdown of the game, the HHS special teams unit returned a punt 70 yards for another score.
Less than a minute later, Damien Kerr enabled the Homer offense to strike again. Kerr picked off an errant VHS pass on the Buccaneers' ensuing possession. Moments later, Croft tossed his third TD pass of the game - a 13-yard strike to Fisk that gave the Mariners a commanding 49-0 cushion with 4:43 left in the opening half.
As a team, the Mariner defense held Valdez to a total of six yards in the contest.
Fisk inflated Homer's lead to 56-0 on the first play of the second half. He fielded the opening kick at his own 19 and then returned it 81 yards for a touchdown.
Croft posted his fourth TD pass of the contest later in the third quarter by hooking up with Felde on a 50-yard scoring play. Felde, who also completed a pair of passes for 65 yards, finished the game with two receptions for 78 yards and a pair of TDs.
Johnson converted seven of his eight extra-point attempts in the contest before closing out the game's scoring with a 28-yard field goal in the fourth.
Ravin and Croft led all Homer rushers with 24 yards. Karl Wickstrom tallied 23.
Homer will return to action this Friday when they travel to Ketchikan
