Katia Holmes and the Homer High School ski team kicked off their season on a bright note last Wednesday by turning in outstanding performances at the Turkey Skate meet in Soldotna. Holmes powered her way to a third-place finish in the season-opening race and helped a short-handed Homer squad do well. Overall, the HHS boys had three skiers place in the top 20 in the boys' division, and five in the girls' race.

Holmes topped the Lady Mariners' efforts on the Tsalteshi Trail slopes. She completed the 5.4-kilometer race in a time of 19 minutes, 50 seconds. Her overall mark was just 26 seconds off the winning time of 19:24 turned in by Kenai's Addison Gibson.

Sophomore Autumn Daigle also did well in the girls' race, as did Zoe Stonorov. Daigle finished fifth in the final standings with a time of 20:15, while Stonorov raced her way to seventh in the standings with a time of 21:15.

Homer coach Alison O'Hara said the race also served as a welcome return to a familiar face for the Lady Mariners as Libby Fadich took to the trails after missing the last few seasons.

"It's wonderful to have Libby Fabich back on the ski team and racing again," she said.

Newcomer Kara Super also did well.

In the boys' race, Denver Waclawski and Andy Super both raced their way to top-10 finishes. Waclawski completed the race in a time of 18:19 and took seventh overall. Super placed 10th at 20:01.

Kenai's Karl Danielson won the boys' race with a time of 15:44. He edged out Soldotna's John-Mark Pothast by a second at the finish line.
