M's place fifth at Lime Solar tourney
The Homer Mariners capped a solid showing at the ACS Lime Solar/Pepsi Invitational Basketball Tournament this past weekend by rolling to a fifth-place finish in the three-day tournament, which was held Jan. 4-6 at Anchorage Christian Schools.
As a team, Homer turned in a 1-2 mark during the tournament. Including a thrilling victory over Bethel in Thursday's opening-round action.
Koby Etzwiler gave Homer fans plenty to smile about in the Mariners' win over Bethel. Het pumped in 12 of his game-high 29 points in the final eight minutes of play and helped Homer claim a 59-52 victory.
The Mariners' didn't fair as well in Friday's semifinal round. East Anchorage managed to claim a 59-43 decision and used the win to propel themselves into the tournament finals against Anchorage Christian. East won the tournament championship on Saturday by downing ACS 85-74.
With the loss to East, Homer dropped into a Saturday showdown with the Delta Huskies for third/fifth.
Delta, which had suffered a 99-65 loss to ACS in the semifinals, got off to a hot start against Homer. The Huskies outscored by a 41-24 clip in the first two quarters and took a comfortable 17-point lead into the half.
Jordan Beachy and Etzwiler helped Homer rally back in the second half. The two keyed an HHS run that cut the Huskies' lead to 10 before Delta managed to answer back.
Beachy led all Homer scorers in the contest with 20 points. Etzwiler and Japheth McGhee added 13 and 12, respectively.
Beachy, who knocked down seven three-point shots in Homer's final two games, and Etzwiler were both named to the all-tournament squad.
