NOAA ships chart unknowns in well-traveled Kachemak Bay
When maps were last charted for Kachemak Bay in 1970, the technology was a single-beam, straight-down look at the ocean floor. Before that, chartographers dropped a lead ball weight to gauge depth for charts.
Technology has changed a bit in the 38 years after the last look. The Bay's floor is now getting a more thorough scrutiny as 101 beams that swath a 360-degree arc seek out irregularities, depth, features, sea life, wrecked ships and more along the bottom.
• City Council hears crime, drug concerns; presentation by Iliamna
Three areas in Homer are plagued by drug deals, noise and chronic speeders, causing many in town to cite a need for more police — and even a resident district attorney.
At Monday's Homer City Council meeting, Mayor James Hornaday — responding to pleas from neighbors in Old Town where a man was murdered Saturday night — agreed that Homer has a problem.

Coordinating with the villages of Nanwalek, Port Graham and Seldovia, the Pratt Museum will host Tamamta Katurlluta for its sixth appearance in the Homer community. The Sugpiak Alutiig phrase (pronounced da-mom-a-da  ka-DOO-SLUU-daa) means "Gathering of Native Tradition," and was initiated in 1998 at the suggestion of Nanwalek Sugpiaq Elder Nick Tanape.
