• International models, photographers and a Grumman Albatross employ Kachemak Bay splendor
As hundreds of shorebirders flocked around the Homer side of Kachemak
Bay last weekend, John and Nelda Osgood saw more than a little
excitement of their own as models and camera crews flew into Tutka Bay
for a high-end fashion photo shoot featuring Izod brand clothing.
Members of the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation spent two days shooting

• Pebble CEO talks energy grid, economic impact
Pebble Chief Executive Officer John Shively told Homer City Council on
Monday night that, despite the hub of controversy at its mention, the
Pebble Mine isn’t yet known as a feasible project.
Shively spoke to the council for about 10 minutes, outlining the stages
necessary in order for the proposed project to pass muster as a
feasible one.
“We are still at the pre-feasibility stage — looking at resources,
looking at what it will take to develop, looking at costs and whether
or not we have an economically viable project,” Shively said. “There
seems to be confusion around the state; some people think we have a
project already.”
Dedicated long-time Homer American Legion member Bill Sheldon was named Alaska's Legionnaire of the Year at the recent convention in Fairbanks, reflecting honor on General Buckner Post 16, as well as himself.
• Shifting budgets push projected mill rate lower
Area property owners may see tax bills decrease more than anticipated in the latest round of mill rate projections.
Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor John Williams proposed a cut in the
property tax levy by .5 mill as part of his fiscal year 2008 borough
spending package. He presented the package last month when the budget
was handed over to the borough assembly. At that point, the levy was
projected at 5 mill rates, down from the previous year’s 5.5 mills.
